How to Make a New Year’s Resolution You Can Stick To

What type of hair and beauty blog would we be if we didn’t discuss New Year’s resolutions? This must be the all time #1 topic that resolutions focus on every year. Everyone says, "This is the year I’m finally going to try that new haircut or lose those 10 pounds." And 2 weeks into the year, most of us have fallen way off the wagon and given up. So how on earth do you set a resolution that you can keep?
  • Be SPECIFIC- “I will grow healthier hair” means nothing. Put a mission behind it! Give yourself something clear to aspire to. Say “I’m going to deep condition every other week,” or “I’m going to moisturize daily.”
  • Set Checkpoints- Sure, technically December 31, 2015 is your deadline, but that’s an entire year away. Wouldn’t it be nice to hit your goal early and perhaps even surpass it? Divide your goal into monthly or weekly checkpoints so that you can track your progress. Seeing it as it happens is great motivation to make more progress!
  • Remind yourself, OFTEN- Set a weekly reminder on your phone or leave yourself little notes around the house that restate your goals. Particularly in places that you tend to go in that moment of weakness. If you're always forgetting your satin bonnet at night, leave a note on your pillow that says “Tie your hair up before bed.” Whatever it takes to remind you that you have goals to reach. Make a meme and set it as your screensaver or lock screen!
  • Reward yourself- As you keep your resolution going, treat yourself every time you hit a MAJOR milestone. Say, every 30 days or every time you successfully achieve a new style. Splurge on a new product or hair accessory. And plan a larger reward for when you reach that final goal. A new outfit or spa day will be very deserved after you’ve met your goals.
  • Keep the list short- Part of this depends on just how epic your goals are, but don’t stretch yourself so thin that you can’t possibly achieve them. I think an ideal number is no more than 5 resolutions. If you complete one before the year has ended, by all means replace it with another, but no more than 5 at a time.
So what’s your resolution for the year? Let’s do it big for 2015!

How to Maintain Your Crochet Braids

Crochet braids are a popular weave style that offers versatility and protection for your hair. It's an especially great choice for surviving winter climates with your healthy hair intact. Like any other style, crochet braids require some basic home maintenance to stay looking good and avoid the ratty, "tumbleweave" look. Neglected crochet braid can look terrible after 2 weeks, but properly maintained, the same style can last 6-8 weeks. This video offers some great tips to help you take care of your hair between salon visits.
So now that you know how to care for them, call the salon today to schedule your appointment! A professional installation will ensure that your new curls (or kinks, or smooth, sleek strands) last as long as possible! And yes, all of these looks are possible with crochet braids...

Does Your Hair Need Moisture or Protein?

Hair is a combination of keratin and moisture. Keratin is a protein that provides the structure; and moisture (basically, water) provides the bounce, shine, and elasticity. Healthy hair has both of these components in a happy balance. Unfortunately, this balance is easy to throw off when your hair is routinely exposed to the elements as you live your regular, everyday life. The imbalance can be even more drastic if you live in an area with extreme weather of any kind.
If your hair doesn't seem shiny and springy, don't fret. Chances are, it's missing either protein or moisture; and you just have to figure out which one. But how? This is the challenge most of us face when it's time to care for our hair at home.
Here is a great article that goes more in depth on the subject, and  the video below offers a great visual explanation:
So how do you bring your hair back into balance? You use either a protein treatment, or a deep conditioner. Here are our favorite ones:

How to Maintain your Salon Style at Home

Nothing is more frustrating that spending your hard-earned money on a fabulous hairstyle, and then finding yourself in a ponytail 3 days later because you just couldn't make it last. Your stylist can do amazing work, but there is no magic spell that will repel gravity, weather, and the pillow away from your hair. Don't worry. There is still hope, Dolls! This week, we're bringing you some key tips to make that hot salon style last once you get home.

  1. New hair color? Relax on the shampoo- If you normally shampoo your hair twice a week, try to cut back to once per week. Invest in a shampoo intended for color-treated hair, or even try co-washing. This will help your color last longer and stay bright.
  2. Pick the right products.- No matter was the budget brands tell you, vaseline is not going to give you the same edge control as the professional-grade pomade your stylist used during your visit. It is worth it to invest in a good product, and your stylist should be able to offer you the best suggestions at the end of your salon visit. Some salons, like All Dolled Up, make the products they use available for purchase by clients.
  3. Ask questions!- A good stylist would be happy to explain to you the basics of maintaining your style. Don't be afraid to ask if you aren't sure how to tie your hair up at night, or if you need to know how to get that one curl to point in the right direction.
  4. Invest in an applicator bottle.- They're very cheap at any beauty supply store, but worth their weight in gold. An applicator bottle with the pointed tip will allow you to apply oils and other products directly to your scalp without drastically disturbing your style.
  5. Satin at night!- Use a satin scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase to protect your hair at night. The satin lets your hair slide across so that you don't get caught in the fabric fibers, which leads to dryness, frizz, and breakage. (This is a general hair health rule, but it also helps maintain your style.)
  6. Don't get wet!- Shower caps will be your best friend when you've got a fresh style. Use them.
  7. Here are some tips specifically for stretching out your relaxer.
Stay beautiful, Dolls!

How to Get a Braider's License in less than a Week!

The New Florida legislation requires all braiders to be licensed and registered with the State. This action protects consumers and industry professionals by putting everything under one umbrella. HIV/AIDS education is a mandatory feature in Florida legislation because of infection and disease control standards. ADU School of Cosmetology has set up fast track courses to get braider's on board to avoid excessive fines and legal issues. So what do you need to know?

1. What is a braider's license?
A Braider's license is a license for hair braiders and some natural hair stylist. It consist of a 16 hour registration course. The state of Florida has approved the ADU curriculum for our school to license braiders to perform braiding, locs and similar services. Students seeking sew in weaving, coloring, cutting and more should apply for full cosmetology.

2. How do I register?
You can register for our basic cosmetology program at our Orlando location only. Our advanced and braider's licensing courses are offered at our South and Central Florida satellite locations based on event availability. Call the salon location nearest you.

3. What if I have an out of state license?
ADU School of Cosmetology works with all licensing scenarios. We may be able to help you transfer a license from out of state or even out of the country. Contact our Orlando location for your specific situation.

5 Popular Hair Methods Explained

So you've got a chronic hair issue, right? Maybe it's split ends, fairy knots, or just general dryness. And all the products you've tried don't seem to be very helpful. So you talk to some friends or you visit a forum online, and people start suggesting these "methods" you've never heard of. "Try Cherry Lola! Max Hydration! Curly Girl!"... what? Don't fret, we've collected some brief but thorough explanations of each of these widely practiced hair methods here!

  1. Cherry Lola Treatment- This process uses a yogurt mixture to combat frizz and define curls.
  2. Max Hydration Method- This 5-step method uses clay to help low-porosity hair hold moisture.
  3. Curly Girl Method- This method teaches you to care for your hair without shampoo, because harsh chemicals in many shampoos are not curl-friendly.
  4. Tightly Curly Method- Be ready to purchase stock in your favorite hair conditioner. But, the creator's hair is down to her hips, so it must work, right?
  5. Caramel Treatment- This concoction uses mostly common kitchen ingredients to give you more manageable hair, relaxed or natural.
While each method is different, one common philosophy rang true: get to know YOUR hair. Any of these processes can be a great start to building your healthy hair regimen, but you have to let your hair be your guide. If you want a little more tangible guidance, schedule a free consultation with a natural hair specialist to get your questions answered.

Long Cornrows Make for a Quick and Easy Protective Style! Here's How!!

Are you looking for a protective style that will last you several weeks and doesn't take 2 days to do? Cornrows can be it! They can be done with relaxed OR natural hair, and don't take 5 packs of hair to do! You can even do them yourself! How convenient is that? So here's a video showing you exactly how to make it happen:
They look so natural and you can part your hair any way you like to make them extra funky! Just keep these tips in mind:

  1. Add smaller pieces of hair in and add them periodically while you braid for a natural-looking braid that starts small, grows bigger, and then tapers off towards the end.
  2. Part your hair with a rat-tail comb for cleaner lines.
  3. Choose extensions that match your texture! If your hair is relaxed, using marley hair makes no sense! Just keep that in mind when at the hair supply store.
  4. Be gentle with your hair, especially the edges. Braids are protective, but they also will put unnecessary tension on your hair if you pull too tight.
  5. Detangle your hair thoroughly!
  6. It is best to do this on well-moisturized, but not completely wet hair. A little water from a spray bottle is enough.
  7. Finish it off with a little hair mousse or gel to keep the braids nice and neat.
This style can last 3 weeks or more with proper maintenance. Here are a few styles you can do with it! Enjoy!!

How Design Essentials Works for Natural Hair (short style tutorial)

The Design Essentials line of products are the top echelon of hair care. This is why All Dolled Up uses them in our salons, on our own clients. It is key, however, that clients continue to care for their hair at home between visits. The best way to do this is to use the same high-quality products that salons use. Check out this fast video review of the Design Essentials Naturals line of products. It even shows you a cute wash-n-go style if you have a short, tapered cut.

You can find every single product used in the video, and more, in our online shop. It will be delivered to your door for added convenience. Your hair deserves nothing but the best!

Have You Been Thinking About Crochet Braids?

By now, you must have heard about the latest salon craze, crochet braids (sometimes called tree braids). In a nutshell, they are a great protective style that can last you well over a month if cared for properly. The stylist will cornrow your hair, and then extensions of your choice are "crocheted" into the braids using a latch hook or other tool. But are crochet braids for you? Let's weigh the pros and cons.

Pros of Crochet Braids:

  • Protective style saves your hair from excessive manipulation and exposure to elements.
  • Can be done in any texture: curly, straight, twists, etc. (It's all up to the quality of hair used.)
  • Can be cut to any length.
  • Can be installed in any length of hair.
  • Can be styled virtually anyway you want.
  • Don't require a lot of expensive hair products to maintain.
  • Offer easy access to the scalp for moisturizing and conditioning.
  • Can be installed in any color, no need to blend with your own hair. (Though a leave out is optional.)
  • Styling is as easy as shake and go!
  • Allows your scalp to BREATHE. (Healthy hair is always #1.)

Cons of Crochet Braids:

  • Can look very unnatural if not trimmed after installing.
  • Can appear clumpy if the base braids are sloppy.
  • Can itch if not cleaned periodically.
So now that you've considered these important points, it's time to think about another equally important key to the success of your style. Of course, I'm talking about maintenance. A stylist can make your hair look incredible, but if you go jump into a pool after leaving the salon, don't expect your fresh style to survive. Here is a great video full of tips to help you get the most longevity out of your crochet braids.

For Tight, Defined Curls, Try this Straw Set Tutorial

A straw set is a great way to get fabulous, tight curls on a budget. It can be a versatile style, and doesn't require any special skills on your part. The best part is, most of the supplies can be found in your local dollar store!

You will need:

1-2 packs of straws
Bobby Pins
a Cream Moisturizer (Recommended: DE Naturals Honey Curl Forming Custard)
a Styling Gel (Recommended: DE Naturals Defining Creme Gel)
a Silk Scarf
a Spray bottle to keep the hair damp
Hair Clips
a Detangler (Recommended: Paul Mitchell Detangler Comb)

Procedure:

  1. Separate clean, damp hair into 4 large sections.
  2. In one section, separate a small section and clip the rest back.
  3. Apply a small amount of moisturizer and gel to the section and work through, focusing on the ends of the hair.
  4. Detangle this section to remove knots.
  5. If your hair is short, you may want to clip the straws to a shorter length for comfort.
  6. Wrap the hair around the straw in a spiral pattern until the straw is flat against your scalp. Insert a bobby pin into the end of the straw nearest your scalp to secure.
  7. Once all hair is secured in this manner, tie a silk scarf to protect your hair while it dries. This can be underneath a dryer or air drying overnight.
  8. Once dry and cooled, remove the bobby pins and straws. Take care to follow the direction of the curl to minimize frizz.
  9. Style as desired! You look fabulous!

Here is a short video to illustrate the process:

How to Get the Most from your Salon Consultation

Many salons now offer consultations to give the stylist and the customer an opportunity to learn about each other and get on the same page about the customer's hair goals. This is an invaluable step on the road to beautiful, healthy hair for any woman. Truthfully, you should never trust your hair to a new stylist without taking this step. You also should never have to pay for a consultation, which is why All Dolled Up Salons offers them for FREE. But how do you get the most out of your meeting with a new stylist?
First off, understand that the consultation is intended to focus on YOU and YOUR HAIR. This means that you must bring enough information to the table to give your stylist a complete picture of what they're working with. You should come prepared to answer questions like:

  1. A brief hair history- Have you dyed/chemically treated/transitioned/BC'd your hair in the past?
  2. Current maintenance regimen- How often do you shampoo, deep condition, and use heat in your hair?
  3. Your hair goals- Are you looking to gain length? Transition? Maintain a relaxer? Try a new color?
  4. Unique circumstances- Do you have any health issues, sensitivities, or medications that may affect your hair? A stylist can only accommodate what they know about.
  5. Your tastes- What do you like and dislike about your current cut, color, or style?
This information will give your stylist the foundation they need to build a proper plan for your hair. Once you've chosen a style, you can expect an explanation about what the styling or care process requires. You will review the products that will be used in your hair, because you should ALWAYS know what is touching your hair. The stylist also has an opportunity to evaluate your hair, which lets them predict how long your actual hair appointment will take. Once you and your stylist are in agreement about your new look, an appointment can be scheduled. Some other great questions for you to ask would be:
  1. What is the best way to maintain my hair at home?
  2. What color or cut would enhance my eyes/face/skin tone? (You may get a suggestion you've never thought of before.)
  3. What products are recommended to keep my hair healthy? (All Dolled Up has an online shop where you can order the same exact products we use in the salon.)
  4. How often should I revisit the salon for professional hair care and maintenance? (This may vary according to the current health state of your hair.)
  5. May I see some of your work? (Don't be too shy to ask to see what the stylist has done for other clients.)
Here is a review of All Dolled Up Salons where a happy customer discusses her thoughts on the consultation process.
